Cinnamon Orange Valentine Cookies

Info and tricks

Cinnamon Orange Valentines cookies are very special to my heart. This is my grandmas recipe which gets made each year on Valentines day. Every time I make these cookies I’m reminded of being a kid baking with grandma. The cookies are soft, melt in your mouth, the orange and cinnamon pair together perfectly, and a pretty pink icing topped with a cinnamon heart ties it all together.

I’m not a huge baker but I find this recipe to be fairly simple. I like to make the dough and then leave it overnight in the fridge to rest. When rolling out the dough the sides may crack a little, don’t be alarmed at this. Sometimes while rolling, the dough would crack or stick to my rolling pin, I simply pressed it back together and continued rolling. If this issue persists, rub a little flour onto the rolling pin and top of the dough. This helps with sticking.

The only thing I modified in my grandmas recipe was the baking time. I absolutely love soft cookies so I changed the overall bake time from 8-10 minutes to 6-8 minutes. The dough will still look a little uncooked when you first pull them out. Instead of removing them off the sheet pan right away, I let them sit for a good 5ish minutes until they were sturdy enough to place on a rack to finished cooling. I find this really helps keep the cookies soft.

When making the icing I don’t measure. I just add more or less of the milk and icing sugar until I reach desired consistency. To test consistency, I like to take a spoon and see how slowly/quickly the icing drips off. For toppings I highly recommend placing a couple cinnamon hearts on the cookies. It really adds something to them and I can’t bake the cookies without it!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup margarine
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp. grated orange rind
  • 2 tbsp. orange juice
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tbsp. cinnamon
  • icing sugar
  • milk
  • couple drops red food coloring
  • cinnamon hearts

Instructions

  1. Cream together margarine and sugar. Add in the egg and mix. Add in orange juice and rind, salt, cinnamon, and baking powder. Mix together well.
  2. Fold in flour until it gets too difficult. Take out dough and knead the remaining flour in by hand. Or if you have a mixer use that! Once all the flour is incorporated wrap in wax paper and let chill in the fridge for an hour or overnight.
  3. Roll out the dough and use heart shape cookie cutters to make heart shapes. Place on a baking sheet with parchment paper and bake in the oven for 6-8 minutes. Remove and allow to cool on the sheet for a few minutes, then place on cooling racks.
  4. To make the icing mix about 1-2 cups of icing sugar with a splash of milk and a couple drops of red food coloring. I don’t measure the milk or icing sugar! I just add more or less until I have the desired consistency. Spread onto cookies and top with cinnamon hearts and any other desired toppings! Enjoy πŸ™‚
