Easy Homemade Hamburger Helper

Info and tricks

Hamburger helper was always a childhood favorite of mine. On busy nights I remember my dad quickly making the boxed hamburger helper. Healthy? Maybe not. Tasty? Absolutely. I haven’t had boxed hamburger helper for many years. So I thought it would be fun to recreate hamburger helper in a somewhat healthier fashion than boxed.

Chopping up your own fresh onions and garlic adds so much flavor. I highly recommend doing this over just using onion and garlic powder. Also the shredded cheese, SHRED YOUR OWN CHEESE GUYS! I seriously can’t express how much this changes things. The bagged stuff sucks.

Other than that this is a pretty much failproof dish with super simple ingredients you probably have in your cupboard.

Ingredients

  • 1 onion
  • 4 garlic cloves
  • lean ground beef
  • 1/3 cup tomato sauce
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 cups milk
  • 4 cups pasta
  • shredded cheddar
  • parsley
  • tbsp salt
  • tbsp pepper
  • tbsp onion powder
  • tbsp garlic powder
  • red pepper flakes to taste

Instructions

  1. Dice your onion and mince your garlic. Add the onion to a pot with oil on medium heat. Simmer for a couple minutes or until the onions are clear and fragrant. Add in the ground beef and cook until browned.
  2. Add in the seasonings, garlic, and tomato sauce. Mix well. Add in beef broth and milk. Bring to a boil and add your choice of pasta.
  3. Once most liquid is gone and pasta is tender, add in as much shredded cheese as you desire. Mix well. Garnish with parsley and more red pepper flakes is desired.
