Creamy garlic parmesan orzo is super cheesy and creamy. Its a quick and easy meal that can be made with minimal ingredients and only 20 minutes of your time. This works great as a side dish or as a meal on its own!
Info and tips
Orzo looks a lot like rice but is actually pasta. You can cook it like pasta, but in this recipe we will be cooking it like rice. It cooks much faster than rice (mine took about 7 minutes) so it’s perfect when you have limited time.
When cooking this dish I started with 2 cups of chicken stock. Along the way I added splashes as needed, in total I probably added another half cup. I also added an extra splash of heavy cream because I like my orzo to be more saucy. Feel free to tweak the recipe to your liking to make the sauce thinner or thicker!
Also try and use fresh parmesan and parsley. It makes such a flavour difference.
Ingredients
- 4 garlic cloves
- 1/4 onion
- drizzle olive oil
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 1/2 cups orzo
- 2 cups chicken stock
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1/4 cup fresh grated parmesan
- 1/4 cup fresh italian parsley
- salt
- pepper
- tsp onion powder
- tsp garlic powder
Instructions
- Begin by mincing the garlic and onion into fine pieces. Meanwhile heat a pan on medium heat and add the oil and butter.
- After the butter is hot and melted, add in the onion and garlic and sauté until fragrant or roughly 2 minutes.
- Next add the orzo into the pan. Cook for another couple minutes until the orzo is slightly browned and has soaked up some of the butter mixture.
- Add in the chicken stock and seasonings to your liking, stir to combine. Bring to a low simmer, adding more chicken stock as needed.
- When the orzo is almost al dente add in the heavy cream. Most of the chicken stock should be absorbed.
- Simmer for another couple minutes until orzo is done to your liking.
- Off heat add the freshly grated parmesan and chopped fresh italian parsley. Mix to combine.
- Plate and top with more parmesan and parsley if desired. Enjoy!
