Saskatoon berry Danish is a delicious fancy looking dessert, but it is so so easy to make at home. This recipe features tart and juicy saskatoon berries with a cream cheese filling in flaky puff pastry.
Info and tips for saskatoon berry Danish
Saskatoon berries are mostly native to Canada, they primarily grow in the western prairies and the territories. They are slightly sweet berries with a lovely tang and earthy flavour. Sometimes they almost remind me of an almond or nutty flavour. If you can’t find any saskatoons don’t worry, this recipe can use any berry- strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, or any other berry that you love!
I use frozen puff pastry in this recipe. If you’d like to use your own absolutely do! Make sure to thaw out the frozen puff pastry overnight in the fridge or on the counter for a couple hours before beginning. You want the puff pastry warm enough to be easy to work with, but still slightly cold to ensure the butter stays solidified.

I love to get Harvest Baskets for gardening, berry picking, and apple picking. They are so cute and fun!
I use a Hand Mixer to beat the cream cheese filling together.
Ingredients for saskatoon berry Danish
- 1 sheet frozen puff pastry
- 125g cream cheese (1/2 a block)
- 3 tbsp brown sugar
- tsp vanilla
- 1/2 tsp almond extract
- 1 and 1/2 cup of saskatoons (or berry of choice)
- 1 tbsp white sugar
- 2 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 tbsp lemon zest
- 1 tbsp cornstarch
- 1 egg
- 1/4 cup powdered sugar
- 1/2 tsp milk (+ a little more if needed)
Instructions
- Before you begin, make sure your puff pastry is thawed and your cream cheese is softened.
- Preheat oven to 400 F.
- Start by adding the cream cheese, brown sugar, vanilla, and almond extract to a bowl. Mix with a hand mixer until smooth.
- Add the berries, white sugar, lemon juice, lemon zest, and cornstarch to another bowl and mix well.
- Roll out your puff pastry and cut into even squares. You should have 6-8 squares depending on the size of your puff pastry. Roll them out a little if needed, and make a smaller square incision 1-2 cm from the edge with your knife. Don’t cut all the way through, this will help the edges puff up and rise while baking.
- Add the cream cheese mixture to the center with 1-2 tbsp of berries on top. Brush the edges with egg wash.
- Bake until edges are slightly brown and golden, around 15 minutes. Be sure to check on them occasionally in case your oven is hotter!
- While they bake, mix the powdered sugar and milk together to create an icing.
- Top the Danishes with a sprinkle of powdered sugar and the icing. Enjoy warm, cold, or at room temp!
