Plus this made my house smell absolutely delicious. This dessert features tender juicy apples cooked in a sweet cinnamon sauce, topped with buttery oat crumble, and baked until crispy.
Info and tips for sweet cinnamon apple crisp
For the best apple crisp you’ll want to pick the right apple. I am blessed to have a crab apple tree in my yard which yields the best apples I’ve ever tasted. Crab apples are much smaller than regular apples, and have a sweet flavour with a sour, mouth puckering after taste. I highly suggest crab apples for this recipe, but if you don’t have access to them there are many other great options.
Honey crisp will give you a close flavour to crab apples. It keeps it’s crispness under heat, is sweet, and has a little tartness. If you love sour and tart flavours go with Granny Smith. If you enjoy a more sweet juicy flavour go with Fuji. Whatever apple you choose, make sure you cut thin even slices so they cook evenly.
I used a 8-inch cast iron pan for this recipe. This works great to get crispy edges and caramelization. You can also use a baking dish if that’s what you have. Air fryer or oven will both work for this recipe!
Equipment
I used this 8-Inch Lodge Cast Iron Pan for my apple crisp and it turned out so juicy and crispy!
Ingredients for sweet cinnamon apple crisp
Apples
- 4 cups sliced apples
- 2 tbsp white sugar
- 2 tbsp brown sugar
- 2 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tbsp vanilla
- 1/2 a lemon juiced
Crumble topping
- 3/4 cup flour
- 1 cup rolled oats
- 1 cup brown sugar
- tsp cinnamon
- 1/2 cold salted butter
Instructions
- Preheat your oven or air fryer to 350 F.
- Begin by cutting your apples into thin even slices. Add the apples to a bowl along with the white sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, vanilla, and lemon juice. Mix well and set aside.
- Make the crumble by adding flour, oats, brown sugar, and cinnamon to a bowl. Cut the salted butter into small cubes and add to the bowl. Work the butter into the dry ingredients. You can use a knife, pastry cutter, or your hands. I find my hands to be easiest, as the natural heat will help break up the butter. Don’t over mix into a dough, you still want it to be crumbly.
- Add the apple mixture to your cast iron or baking dish. Spread the crumble evenly over top.
- Bake for 35-40 minutes or air fry for 20-25 minutes. Please frequently check the apple crisp as some ovens/air fryers are hotter than others, and cause the top to burn quickly.
- Let rest for 5-10 minutes before enjoying with vanilla ice cream if desired and enjoy!
