Info and tips for homemade garlic naan
For this recipe we will be using yeast. Some recipes don’t use it but I personally like the flavour of it! I used active dry yeast in this recipe which requires you to activate it. This is done by placing the yeast, sugar, and warm water in a bowl and letting it sit for about 10 minutes. The yeast should be bubbly and foamy, that’s how you can tell if it activated! If you’d like to use instant yeast instead you won’t need to activate it, just mixing all the ingredients together will work.
When cooking the naan you won’t need any oil. This is called dry frying, and it will help get those dark brown spots that naan is known for. The naan only needs a couple minutes on each side. I like to use a cast iron for this to help get a more charred flavour. You want to have a decent level of heat, somewhere around medium to high. The best part is watching the naan puff up and get big bubbles!
Equipment
I recommend using a cast iron pan to fry the naan. I’ve been using this Lodge Cast Iron Pan for a couple years and I love it.
I love using my Bench Scraper when working with breads.
Ingredients for homemade garlic naan
- 1 cup warm water
- tsp sugar
- 2 and a 1/4 tsp of dry active yeast (1 packet)
- 4 cups flour
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- 1/3 cup Greek yogurt
- extra 1-2 tsp of water if needed
- 2-3 tsp butter
- 1 garlic clove minced
- 1 tbsp fresh minced cilantro
Instructions
- Start by combining your warm water, yeast, and sugar in a bowl. Whisk together and cover for about ten minutes until the yeast is bubbly and activated.
- Next add the flour, salt, olive oil, and Greek yogurt, to the bowl and knead until a ball forms. You can do this by hand or in a mixer. If it looks a little dry add teaspoons of water to the dough until it comes together.
- Once you have your dough ball begin kneading for 5-10 minutes until it becomes soft and smooth. If there are any cracks, slightly dampen your hands and continue kneading. Place back in the bowl and cover. Let rise for an hour in a warm place until doubled in size.
- Next section the dough into 8 pieces. Roll each one into a ball and flatten out with a rolling pin. You want them to be decently thin.
- Heat a cast iron on medium heat. Dry fry each piece of naan in the pan for 1-2 minutes each side. Once you start to see bubbles and the naan start to brown on the bottom you can flip!
- Warm up the butter with the minced garlic and cilantro in the microwave. Brush each piece of naan with the butter and enjoy!
