If you like french onion soup and grilled cheese then I guarantee you will love this recipe. French onion grilled cheese features golden caramelized onions between two pieces of crusty sourdough and gruyere cheese, all toasted until golden and melty.
Info and tips
This recipe is super easy like a normal grilled cheese. The only extra step is carmelizing the onions. It seems daunting but it’s actually pretty simple!
Start by slicing the onions into thin pieces, they don’t all have to be even! Use a sharp knife when slicing to avoid crying 🙂
To caramelize this amount of onions it will take around 45 minutes to 1 hour. By covering the pan with a lid it will caramelize them faster. If you find the onions are sticking or burning, add a little bit of water to the pan.
Always cook on low heat. Using high heat will only burn the onions. Take your time, check in on them as they cook. Stir once in a while. Once you see a deep golden brown colour, and they smell sweet, you have caramelized onions!
I like to add worcestershire sauce, thyme, and balsamic glaze once they are caramelized!
Ingredients
- 1 yellow onion
- 2 tbsp butter
- drizzle of oil
- salt and pepper (to taste)
- pinch of fresh thyme
- few drops of worcestershire sauce
- drizzle of balsamic glaze
- sourdough bread
- gruyere cheese
- cheddar cheese
Instructions
- Start by slicing your onions into half circles.
- Drop your butter and oil in a pan on low heat, add in the onion slices and cover.
- Occasionally stir the onions until golden brown. It should take about 45 minutes to one hour. Add a splash of water if the onions stick to the pan.
- Once onions are caramelized, add the worcestershire sauce, thyme, balsamic glaze, salt and pepper.
